Ultram Uses

• Ultram is used to relieve moderate to moderately severe pain. It also may be used to treat pain caused by surgery and chronic conditions such as cancer or joint pain. This medication is sometimes prescribed for other uses; ask your doctor or pharmacist for more information.

Ultram Directions

• Take Ultram by mouth every four to six hours, either with or without food. The medication helps cut down on the pain sensed by the brain, and reduces the pain signals that are sent along the nerves.

Ultram Side Effects

• Patients do not report many side effects from taking Ultram. They are, however, possible, and can include upset stomach, dizziness, drowsiness, diarrhea, blurred vision, headache, vomiting.

• Let your doctor know as soon as possible if you develop numbness or tingling of the hands and feet, redness, swelling, and itching of the face, fast heartbeat, difficulty breathing, changes in urination or seizures.

• If you suspect a drug overdose, call the local poison control center. Symptoms can include slowed heartbeat, cold and clammy skin, drowsiness, low body temperature, slowed breathing, dizziness, lightheadedness, seizures, deep sleep, and loss of consciousness.

Ultram Warnings

• If you are taking Ultram, let your doctor know if you are allergic to any of its ingredients or any other drugs, or if you are using anything else, such as sleeping pills; tranquilizers; pain relievers; carbamazepine (Tegretol); MAO inhibitors [phenelzine (Nardil) or tranylcypromine (Parnate)]; medications for depression; quinidine; and vitamins. Your doctor needs to know if you have ever had kidney or liver disease, seizures, or if you have a history of alcohol or drug abuse.

• Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or likely to become pregnant, or if you are breastfeeding. If you become pregnant while using Ultram, tell your doctor as soon as possible. If you are undergoing any surgery, even dental surgery, your doctor should know if you are taking Ultram.

• Ultram may cause drowsiness. Be careful about operating machinery or driving while taking Ultram, until you know how you will feel while on the medication. Drinking alcohol can cause extreme drowsiness.

Ultram Drug Interactions

• Use of Ultram is not recommended if you are also taking cyclobenzaprine or medicine for depression or other emotional or mood disorders. If you are taking any of these medicines, be sure your doctor knows. Additional monitoring of your dose or condition may be needed if you are taking bupropion, narcotic analgesics, or have a history of seizures. Inform your doctor of any other medical conditions, allergies, pregnancy, or breast-feeding. Contact your doctor or pharmacist if you have any questions or concerns about using Ultram.

Ultram Missed Dose

• you miss a dose of Ultram, take it as soon as possible. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Do not take 2 doses at once.

Ultram Storage

• Ultram should be stored at room temperature. Keep it away from moisture and sunlight, such as in the bathroom. Discard any unused or expired medication.

Anything Else I Should Know About Ultram

• Be careful to follow the instructions your doctor gives you for taking Ultram. The drug can be habit forming. It should not be used in larger quantities, for longer than directed, or more often than your doctor's directions.
