What is Vicodin and how to use Vicodin?

Vicodin combines a narcotic analgesic (painkiller) and cough reliever with a non-narcotic analgesic for the relief of moderate to moderately severe pain. Vicodin may make you drowsy, less alert, or unable to function well physically. Do not drive a car, operate machinery, or perform any other potentially dangerous activities until you know how Vicodin affects you.

Use Vicodin with caution if you have a severe liver or kidney disorder, an underactive thyroid gland, Addison's disease (a disease of the adrenal glands), an enlarged prostate, or urethral stricture (narrowing of the tube carrying urine from the bladder).

How Does Vicodin Work?

Vicodin is a semisynthetic narcotic analgesic and antitussive with multiple actions qualitatively similar to those of codeine. Most of these involve the central nervous system and smooth muscle. The precise mechanism of action of hydrocodone and other opiates is not known, although it is believed to relate to the existence of opiate receptors in the central nervous system. In addition to analgesia, narcotics may produce drowsiness, changes in mood, and mental clouding.

Radioimmunoassay techniques have recently been developed for the analysis of hydrocodone (Vicodin) in human plasma. After a 10 mg oral dose of hydrocodone bitartrate, a mean peak serum drug level of 23.6 ng/ml and an elimination half-life of 3.8 hours were found.

The analgesic action of acetaminophen involves peripheral and central influences, but the specific mechanism is as yet undetermined. Antipyretic activity is mediated through hypothalamic heat regulating centers. Acetaminophen inhibits prostaglandin synthetase. Therapeutic doses of acetaminophen have negligible effects on the cardiovascular or respiratory systems; however, toxic doses may cause circulatory failure and rapid, shallow breathing.

Types of Vicodin

• Generic Vicodin: The least strongest form is regular Vicodin; it contains 5mg Hydrocodone which is the narcotic element and 500mg acetaminophen, also known as Tylenol. It is said that the acetaminophen adds to the effects of Hydrocodone.
• Vicodin ES: Vicodin ES is a stronger form of Vicodin Vicodin ES contains 7.5mg Hydrocodone and 750mg acetaminophen. Vicodin ES has the highest amount of acetaminophen compared to similar medications on the market. Too much acetaminophen can cause liver damage, especially if taken daily or in combination with alcohol. Make sure that you exactly follow your doctors instructions when taking this medication.
• Vicodin HP: Vicodin HP is the strongest form of Vicodin. Vicodin HP contains 10mg Hydrocodone and 660mg Acetaminophen, the combination is usually indicated as Hydro/APAP on your medicine bottle. It is recommended that you do not exceed 4000mg of acetaminophen per day. If you take Vicodin for longer periods of time it is recommended that you stay below 2000mg acetaminophen daily, this means no more then 3 tablets daily.
