What is Lorcet and how to use Lorcet?

Lorcet Plus is a combination of a narcotic and acetaminophen used to relieve moderate to severe pain. Narcotic pain-relievers work by binding to opioid receptors in the brain and spinal cord, and acetaminophen decreases the formation of prostaglandins, therefore reducing pain. Lorcet Plus may also be used to treat other conditions as determined by your doctor.

Lorcet act in the central nervous system (CNS) to relieve pain. Many of their side effects are also caused by actions in the CNS. When Lorcet is used for a long time, your body may get used to them so that larger amounts are needed to relieve pain. This is called tolerance to the medicine. Also, when Lorcet is used for a long time or in large doses, they may become habit-forming (causing mental or physical dependence). Physical dependence may lead to withdrawal symptoms when you stop taking Lorcet.

Avoid alcohol while taking Lorcet. Alcohol will greatly increase the drowsiness and dizziness caused by Lorcet and could be dangerous. Also, acetaminophen can damage your liver if you drink three or more alcoholic beverages a day. Avoid sleeping pills, tranquilizers, sedatives, and antihistamines except under the supervision of your doctor. These medications also may cause dangerous sedation. Do not share Lorcet with others for whom it was not prescribed, since they may have a problem that is not effectively treated by this drug.

Types of Lorcet

Lorcet comes in different strength; the strongest form available is Lorcet 10/650. The first number stands for the amount of hydrocodone and the second number reflects the amount of acetaminophen. The most similar medication to Lorcet 10/650 is Vicodin HP 10/660. Although I am not sure about the different filters being used (i.e. to add color to the pills) the only difference in active ingredients is 10mg acetaminophen which makes these two brands almost identical. Because the maximum daily recommended dose for long term use of acetaminophen is 2000mg you should not take more than 3 pills per day and always follow the exact advise of your physician. If you are taking Lorcet for a short period of time the maximum recommended dose of acetaminophen is 4000mg per day. Because Norco only contains 325mg acetaminophen this is often the drug of choice for patients who need hydrocodone containing medications over longer periods of time.
