Watching your Weight during the Holidays
The holiday season is usually the time to wine, dine and make merry. It is also the time when all diets go out of the window. This however, doesn't have to be the case. With some planning, you can party as much as you like and not add any inches to your waistline.
Pre-Party Dos
You may be invited to a lot of parties during the holiday season. There are several things you can do to ensure you don't overeat.
One way of keeping your food consumption down is to eat before you go out. An apple or a large glass of water before leaving home will keep you away from the dessert cart at the party.
At-the-Party! Dos and Don't
Now that you have lined your stomach, all you have to do is to take care of your calories, maintaining them at a sensible level. Do keep away from the high calorie sips. Alcohol, for instance, has a high calorie content that will easily build up to shatter your calorie allowance. It's a good idea to talk about anything but food, and try avoiding holding a plate! it helps to do something else with your hands, so they are occupied.
If you can't resist the food table, head for the vegetable and fruit trays first. Fill up most of your plate with these so that you are forced to take tiny portions of the high fat items. That way you won't miss out on any food and yet keep your calorie intake low.
When dinner is served, nibble at your food and leave half of it uneaten. In case your host notices, make some excuse of how you have eaten way too much and just couldn't manage another bite. Alternatively, you could always say you were on a diet. This normally forestalls any further questioning. Either way, make sure you compliment your host on how delicious everything is.
At home
It is different when you are preparing for the holiday season, making the food at home. Because you can choose what's best for your diet. So, you can always create a menu with low fat, low calorie dishes. After all, you are in charge!
When you're cooking, you'll want to avoid tasting everything by having another family member take over that position. They'll love being the official tester and you won't have to worry about adding calories to your day.
You might also want to freeze any cookies or other tempting items until you will be eating them for a meal or a gathering. It's a lot harder to eat something that's frozen.
With all these precautions, you might just end up losing a few pounds during the holiday season! Even if that's not the case, just the fact that you haven't added any extra weight is something to rejoice about.
